Lord Shani is one of the nine planets of Indian astrology. Navagrahas are the nine celestial deities in Hinduism.Lord Shani is the god of Shanivar (Saturday). Lord Shani is the son of Surya (Sun God) and his wife Chaya. Saturn, considered the most malefic, is a major planet that does its rounds of the twelve Rasis of the zodiac, in about 30 years. In Vedic astrology the period when Saturn transits 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from Moon sign is called Sade Sati. and it is a very dreadful word for the common masses. It occurs after every 30 years in life.

Shani Jayanti is considered to be the day on which Lord Shani was appeared on earth. Shani Jayanti is observed on Amavasya (New moon day) in Vaishakh month. This day is also called ‘Shani Amavasya’. In the year of 2011, the date of Shani Jayanti is June 1. This year Shani Jayanti has immense impact and spiritual significance as apart from Amavasya, there is also a Solar Eclipse. Shani Jayanti is celebrated with extreme dedication in many temples like Mandapalli Mandeshwara Swamy Temple, Sri Kalahasti Navagraha Temple, Wargal Shaneeshwara Temple in Medak district of Andhra Pradesh and all Navagraha Temples in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In Shani Shingnapur Shaneshwara Mandir, Sani Jayanthi is the most important festival for the duration of which a lot of rituals and rites are performed.

In mythology, Shani Dev has been described as the son of Lord Sun and Chhaya, hence also known as 'Chayyaputra'. Shani is the elder brother of Yama, the Hindu God of death, who in some scriptures corresponds to the deliverance of justice. He is said to be very harmful to those who follow the path of betrayal, backstabbing and unjust revenge. It is said that when Shani opened his eyes for the first time at birth, the Sun went into an eclipse. Lord Shani is depicted dark in colour as he is always clothed in black, holding a sword, arrows and two daggers and mounted on a black vulture.
