Kanaka Surabhewara Temple is situated on the bank of the river Gundlakamma, near Thrimella Village, Giddalur Taluka, A.P. It is 3 Kms. away from Thurimella towards west. Jamadagni, one of the seven Rushis, sitting on the bank of river Gundlakamma, began Meditation for Shiva for many years with Sevear Deeksha. He used to take only fruits but not food. After some time he used to take only water but no use. Shiva did not appear to him. Ultimately he stopped to take even water except taking air to lie and to immediate. Thus he did stem meditation. Consequently fiery waves of Tapassu spread to all directions and all living creatures were frightened. Some of the animals and birds were died of fiery waves. Life become very difficult to all living creatures on the earth. Soon Devatas went to Lord Shiva and prayed to Shiva to give Darshan to Jamadagni.
Then Shiva appeared before Jamadagni Maharshi asked Jamadagni felt happy for the fruitfulness of his mediation. He looked at the divine from of Lord Shiva who appeared before him and offered Satsanga Namaskarams to Lord Shiva. Then lord Shiva assured Jamadagni a boon. Then Jamadagni felt joy and implored Lord Shiva to keep Shiva’s Divyamangala Rupam in that holy place forever. Then Shiva stayed there in the form of Shiva linga on the request of Jamadagni. Jamadagni used to offer Abhishekam to Shiva lingam with milk which is obtained from the divine cow named ‘Surabhi’. But there was no temple for Shiva lingam to protect from rains and the heat of the sun. So Jamadagni thought of building a temple, but he had no money. Then he chouted sthothrams to Goddess Lakshmi for financial assistance. Soon Golden rain was (Kanakavarsham) showered by Goddess Lakshmi for one week. Gold coins spread every where.Maharshi Jamadagni constructed a divine temple for Lord Shiva by using gold coins. Jamadagni became popular among the seven Rushis on account of offering archana to Shiva, with the milk of Surabhi (divine cow) and showering of Golden coins (kanakavarsham). Thus this place become Kanaka Surabheswara Temple. Kanaka in (Showering gold Coins) Kanaka Varsham, and Surabhi in the milk Surabhi cow and Eswara (Shiva) Every year Maha Shivarathri festival is being celebrated gloriously at this Surabheswara temple. Thousands of people from different places used to visit the divine form of Shivalingam and worship Shiva to get blessings of Shiva. Anyone who visits and worships Shiva on he day of Maha Shivarathri, will definitely attain Moksha, as per Shiva Puranam.
